Oregano is a popular culinary herb, used in cooking for the flavor of its leaves. It has an aromatic, slightly bitter taste. Its scientific name is Origanum vulgare and it belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae).The name comes from the Greek words oros (mountain) and ganos (joy). This herb is native to warm western and southwestern Eurasia and the Mediterranean region.

The chemicals that give oregano its specific and unique smell are thymol, pinene, limonene, carvacrol, ocimene and caryophyllene.

Not only does oregano provide food flavor, it is also an important medicinal herb that has been used in medicine for thousands of years. Hippocrates used oregano as an antiseptic as well as a cure for stomach and respiratory ailments.

Oregano is a powerful antimicrobial because it contains thymol and carvacol, two oils with significant bacteria-fighting power.

This herb is a powerful antioxidant due to a high content of phenolic acids and flavonoids.

Oregano is used to treat respiratory tract disorders, gastrointestinal disorders and urinary tract disorders.

When applied topically it helps treat a number of skin conditions, such as acne and dandruff.

Oregano helps fight fatigue and headaches and can relieve toothache and muscle pain.

It kills intestinal parasites and repels insects.

Oregano is a rich source of vitamin K – an important vitamin which promotes bone growth and production of blood clotting proteins.

It is high in fiber, iron, manganese, vitamin E, calcium and other important minerals.

This herb is also a natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Cinnamon is obtained from the inner bark of several trees from the genus Cinnamomum and is best known as a spice, sprinkled on toast and lattes. There are two main types of cinnamon:

  • Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon) – most commonly used in the Western world.
  • Cinnamomum aromaticum (Cassia cinnamon or Chinese cinnamon) originates from southern China and is less expensive than Ceylon cinnamon.

Cinnamon has been used as a spice since 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt. But extracts from the bark of the cinnamon tree have also been used traditionally as medicine throughout the world. In medieval times doctors used cinnamon to treat several conditions such as coughing, indigestion, bloating, arthritis and sore throats.

Nowadays cinnamon is used to treat muscle spasms, vomiting, diarrhea, infections, common cold, loss of appetite. It may lower blood sugar in people with type 1 or 2 diabetis. Since cinnamon is sweet to the taste, it satisfies the cravings for sweet foods that generally afflicts diabetics. Cinnamon may help prevent Alzheimer`s disease and stop Multiple Sclerosis. In addition, it helps prevent the spread of cancer cells and the formation of stomach ulcers. Recent studies have shown that it may be effective against HIV.

Cinnamon is rich in manganese, iron, calcium and fiber.

Including a scoop of cinnamon into your daily diet can help you lose weight. Just add one part cinnamon powder and two parts honey to a cup of boiling water:

  • 1 tbsp of organic honey
  • 1 tsp of organic cinnamon
  • Put cinnamon in a bowl
  • Boil 1 cup of water
  • Pour the hot water over the cinnamon
  • Steep for 15 minutes
  • Add honey to the cooled water (hot liquid will destroy the enzymes in the raw honey)

Drink twice a day: ½ cup in the morning and ½ cup before going to bed. Take on an empty stomach.

You may experience more energy and better sex drive.

CAYENNE PEPPER

SONY DSCToday we would like to talk about a well-known and widely used plant – cayenne pepper. The ripe fruits of this plant are used as a popular spice, but cayenne peppers also are dried and powdered or tinctured for medical purposes.

Cayenne pepper belongs to the Capsicum family of vegetables which are commonly known as chilli peppers. It is named for the city Cayenne in French Guiana because of its cultivation there.

The botanical name of the plant is Capsicum annuum.

Cayenne is an excellent source of vitamin A. It is also a very good source of vitamins E, C, B6, fiber and manganese.

Cayenne pepper  has been used for a variety of conditions and here are just a few health benefits of the plant.

It is a good anti-irritant and can ease upset stomach, ulcers, diarrhea and sore throat.

Cayenne helps digestion, relieves intestinal gas and stimulates intestinal peristaltic motion.

It serves as a good anti-cold and anti-flue agent.

This plant has excellent anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

It has been used as a joint-pain reliever and anti-allergen.

Cayenne pepper promotes heart health.

Historically Capsicum annuum been used as topical remedy to treat snake bites, rheumatism, sores, wounds and lumbago.

Cayenne pepper supports weight loss as it helps to reduce appetite and is a great metabolic booster which helps the body to burn fats.

Nowadays cayenne is widely used as a detox support. It is a good circulatory stimulant and also increases the pulse of our lymphatic and digestive rhythms. By heating the body, the natural process of detoxification is enhanced. Cayenne makes us sweat and this is another important process of detoxification. Combined with lemon juice and honey, cayenne tea is an excellent morning drink for total body detox.
