Cinnamon is obtained from the inner bark of several trees from the genus Cinnamomum and is best known as a spice, sprinkled on toast and lattes. There are two main types of cinnamon:
- Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon) – most commonly used in the Western world.
- Cinnamomum aromaticum (Cassia cinnamon or Chinese cinnamon) originates from southern China and is less expensive than Ceylon cinnamon.
Cinnamon has been used as a spice since 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt. But extracts from the bark of the cinnamon tree have also been used traditionally as medicine throughout the world. In medieval times doctors used cinnamon to treat several conditions such as coughing, indigestion, bloating, arthritis and sore throats.
Nowadays cinnamon is used to treat muscle spasms, vomiting, diarrhea, infections, common cold, loss of appetite. It may lower blood sugar in people with type 1 or 2 diabetis. Since cinnamon is sweet to the taste, it satisfies the cravings for sweet foods that generally afflicts diabetics. Cinnamon may help prevent Alzheimer`s disease and stop Multiple Sclerosis. In addition, it helps prevent the spread of cancer cells and the formation of stomach ulcers. Recent studies have shown that it may be effective against HIV.
Cinnamon is rich in manganese, iron, calcium and fiber.
Including a scoop of cinnamon into your daily diet can help you lose weight. Just add one part cinnamon powder and two parts honey to a cup of boiling water:
- 1 tbsp of organic honey
- 1 tsp of organic cinnamon
- Put cinnamon in a bowl
- Boil 1 cup of water
- Pour the hot water over the cinnamon
- Steep for 15 minutes
- Add honey to the cooled water (hot liquid will destroy the enzymes in the raw honey)
Drink twice a day: ½ cup in the morning and ½ cup before going to bed. Take on an empty stomach.
